Although both tests assess college readiness, they differ in format, question styles, and scoring.
SAT: The digital SAT consists of two sections: Reading and Writing and Math. Students receive a total score ranging from 400 to 1600, with each section scored from 200 to 800. Reading and Writing questions focus on comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, editing, and analyzing short passages. Math questions assess algebra, advanced math, problem-solving, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. The SAT uses a combination of multiple-choice and student-produced response questions in Math.
ACT: The ACT assesses English, Math, and Reading, with Science and Writing available as optional sections. The three required sections receive individual scores from 1 to 36, and the Composite score is the average of English, Math, and Reading, rounded to a whole number. English questions emphasize grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. Reading questions assess comprehension, analysis, and interpretation, while Math covers a range of high school mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The optional Science section focuses on interpreting data, evaluating experiments, and analyzing scientific information.
Choosing the right test and preparing effectively can make a meaningful difference in a student's college application journey. I help students understand the demands of each exam, identify the test that best matches their strengths, and develop the skills and confidence to reach their potential.
